Angioedema and Hives Symptoms
Although they are somewhat similar, there are very distinct differences
between angioedema and hives symptoms. What causes hives is the body’s reaction
to a “foreign” substance that enters the body like viruses or allergens. The
body has an allergic reaction to the substance and reacts by send out histamines
throughout the body to try to fight the “foreign” substance and basically over
reacts. Hives symptoms tend to appear on the skin and affect just the first few
layers of skin. If hives get into the deeper levels of the skin, you will
experience a more over all swelling and angioedema symptoms.
Angioedema and Hives symptoms may include:
- Raised red or whitish welts on the skin (they can be any size). They can
appear anywhere on the body but are more likely near your eyes and mouth and
are less likely on your hands an feet. They can look like poison ivy or
chicken poxes.
- The welts change location and shape quickly. Hives can actually shrink
and go away in one area and move to a separate location.
- A red rash around the welts.
- Swelling in the face.
- Lips can become swollen.
- Tongue swelling is also a common symptom.
Focused Angioedema Symptoms:
- Swelling under the skin’s surface that does not itch, but burns instead.
- Loss of sensation in the limbs due to swelling around nerve endings
- Swelling in the throat is rarely seen in hives but is very likely in
angioedema.
- Breathing that has a wheezing sound from airway restriction.
- Respiratory Distress.
- Pain. The severity of pain will vary from mild discomfort to
debilitating.
- In some rare cases, airway obstruction can be caused by the swelling.
In some severe cases, you can get abdominal angioedema. You will have major
swelling in your abdominal area. It will give you a cramping feeling. This is
very painful and can cause weakness, vomiting and watery diarrhea. You can also
get a rash that is not itchy but swirled and reddish. You can become easily
dehydrated.
Listed above are many of the most common symptoms of hives and angioedema. Each
individual may have different symptoms. Although the symptoms can very in both
severity and length of time, it is always recommended for you to contact your
doctor or seek medical attention if you suspect you have angioedema and hives
symptoms.
