Symptoms of Hearing Loss
Symptoms of hearing loss are directly related to the different types.
Sensorineural, or Sensory hearing loss is when there is damage to the inner ear.
This can be caused by factors such as aging, pre-natal and birth-related
problems, infections, heredity, head trauma, exposure to loud noises, and fluid
build up. This type of hearing loss is mostly treated with the use of hearing
aids. Conductive hearing loss involves the outer and middle ear that may be
caused by blockage of wax, pierced eardrum, ear infection, heredity, birth
defects. This type of hearing loss can usually be treated through surgical
procedures. Mixed hearing loss symptoms is a combination of Conductive and
Sensorineural loss. This type of hearing loss can occur in both the outer or
middle ear. Lastly there is Central or Neural hearing loss. This type of hearing
loss is mainly caused by damage to the nerves of the body's central nervous
system, affecting the brain, and the pathway between the brain and the Cochlea.
Hearing loss symptoms may include:
- Withdrawal from conversations
- Social settings Avoidance
- Difficulty understanding words, against background noise
- Quality of speech and other sounds are muffled
- Need to turn up the volume of the radio or television
Hearing loss in children
Some early symptoms of hearing loss include children who do not begin using
their voices to make simple sounds or are not responsive to loud noises or your
own voice. Other symptoms that may not necessarily indicate hearing loss may
occur due to otitis media. Otitis media is an inflammation of the inner ear due
to infection of the eardrum. Symptom include:
- Irritability
- Having a fever
- Inattentiveness
- Excessive pulling or rubbing of the ear
Hearing loss, in many instances, is an avoidable problem. Many people suffer
from hearing loss over the course of a few years because of their lifestyle.
Others suffer from sudden hearing loss due to an accident or unexpected event.
