Symptoms of Radiation Sickness
Radiation poisoning symptoms, also known as "radiation sickness
symptoms", is a
type of damage to natural tissue from excessive contact with ionizing radiation.
The expression is usually used to describe acute issues that are caused from
radiation in a large dosage over a short period of time. As ionizing radiation
meddles with cell separation, the symptoms of radiation poisoning start to
occur. This interference permits cancer cell treatment. These cancer cells are
among the quickest to divide in the body, and can be killed by radiation, where
the neighboring normal cells are most likely to survive.
Radiation Sickness Symptoms may include:
- Vomiting
- Weight loss
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Loss of appetite
- Itchy red skin
- Weakness
- Hair and teeth loss
- Sore throat and/or a sore mouth
- Infections that recur frequently
- Anemia and bleeding
The accurate name for "radiation sickness" is acute radiation
syndrome. Although a chronic radiation syndrome does exist, is very uncommon and
has been seen among workers in earlier years of the Soviet nuclear program and
in the radium source production sites. Acute radiation syndrome may result from
just a small exposure, where chronic radiation syndrome would require extended
periods of high levels of exposure. Radiation sickness is usually linked with
severe exposure and has a distinguishing set of symptoms that generally appear
in a systematic fashion. The chances of survival decrease as the symptoms become
more due to the increased dosage of radiation. Such effects are often referred
to as the deterministic effects of radiation. Cancer can be induced as the genes
of the cell-cycle are mutated, which is caused from longer term exposure to
radiation at doses that are less than those that can produce severe radiation
sickness. If a type of cancer is caused from radiation, then the disease, the
amount of time it takes for the condition to advance, the diagnosis, the amount
of pain and all other aspects of the disease is not a purpose of the radiation
dose that the individual was exposed to.
If you have been exposed to radiation, you should seek the
advice of a medical professional immediately. As with any type of illness, it is
important to get diagnosed as soon as possible as early detection is the best
defense. If you feel you are displaying Symptoms of Radiation Sickness, please
contact your physician as quickly as possible to avoid serious complications.
