Urinary Tract Infection Symptoms
A urinary tract infection is an infection that begins in your urinary system. The symptoms can be painful and annoying. Urinary tract infections are more common in women than in men. They are also more common in older adults than in younger
adults. They can become a serious health problem if the infection spreads to your kidneys.
Symptoms may include:
- Pressure in your lower belly
- Urine that smells bad or looks milky, cloudy, or reddish in color
- Pain or stinging when you pass urine
- An urge to pass urine a lot
- Feeling tired or shaky or having a fever
Specific symptoms depending on which part of your urinary tract is
infected:
- Cystitis. infection of your
bladder may result in pressure in the pelvis and lower abdomen and
strong-smelling urine.
- Acute pyelonephritis.
Infection of your kidneys may occur after spreading from an infection in
your bladder. Kidney infection can cause flank pain, high fever, shaking
chills, and nausea or vomiting.
- Urethritis. Infection of the urethra leads to
burning with urination and sometimes pus in your urine. In men, urethritis
may cause penile discharge.
In children, symptoms of a urinary infection may be overlooked or attributed
to another disorder. A UTI should be considered when a child or infant seems
irritable, is not eating normally, has an unexplained fever that does not go
away, has incontinence or loose bowels, or is not thriving. The child should be
seen by a doctor if there are any questions about these symptoms, especially a
change in the child's urinary pattern.
